I do not accept the logic of total war, it leads to mass murder, and with large enough nuclear arsenals, it could lead to mass murder, the destruction of our present civilization, and the destruction of any possibility of building a better civilization.

I do not believe there is any legitimate reason for a ~~second~~ vengeance strike capability, or a first strike capability.

It used to be widespread practice for occupation forces to kill civilians to deter partisans. If the partisans killed one occupation soldier, the occupation forces would kill a certain number of civilians. It is the same logic on a smaller scale.

It is wrong.

Retaliation capability is there to minimize the threat to human life generally… I’m not saying it’s a good thing, I’m saying it’s what we’ve got to ensure that there’s not a replay of Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

And the occupation forces you reference never killed one civilian for one deat occupier, it was always a massive over-retaliation, the kind of over-retaliation a nuclear deterrent is designed to prevent.

Getting really tired of seeing a lack of space between trans and women, seeing women and trans women used separately, and seeing the asterisk used where it has no place being used, not to mention if transness is a spectrum, to a large extent so is cisness. And it’s also telling how you shift from saying trans men can’t be lesbian women (as though somehow they can still be lesbians?) and then saying trans women can be lesbians… leaving out the noun you used one point before.

There’s nothing that bugs me more than progressivism that still manages to other, still manages to maintain the differences the OP feels it’s important to maintain, either for themselves or to garner the approval of others, but does so under a veneer of acceptance. Stop it, please.

I can see the president at a staff meeting considering nuclear war as an abstract question. He might conclude, “On SIOP Plan One, the decision is affirmative. Communicate the alpha line XYZ.” Such jargon keeps what is involved at a distance.

My suggestion them, is quite simple. Put that needed code number in a little capsule and implant that capsule right next to the heart of a volunteer. The volunteer will carry with him a big, heavy butcher knife as he accompanies the president. If ever the president wants to fire nuclear weapons, the only way he can do so is by first, with his own hands, killing one human being.

Other than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts, all nuclear detonations in history have been tests. Whatever other faults nuclear weapons have, their consequence is clear: Cities destroyed, thousands or millions of immediate deaths, millions of lingering deaths from cancer. Furthermore, the strategic calculus of a nuclear strike is total destruction. “When one flies, they all fly” has been the policy on nuclear launches since the 1950s. Since World War II, a nuclear warhead has never been launched as a warshot. I cannot say that will never change, but that’s the history.

The idea that having to add to the butcher’s bill with one person killed by the President’s hands will add any more deterrence to what is already a call fraught with practical checkpoints and moral difficulties is frankly insulting.

But most people can’t kill in person, but can kill at a distance. When soldiers had inaccurate muskets, they could fire at an enemy formation, but as they switched to more accurate rifles, they couldn’t aim at an enemy soldier, they would aim to miss, but with push-button warfare, these constraints don’t seem to apply any more.

And nuclear war would mean mass murder on an unprecedented scale. I don’t care if it makes it harder to demand anything, if it makes it easier to avoid destroying human civilization.

If a policy makes it harder to credibly deter, it incentivizes first-strike attacks from other nuclear powers, which makes it harder to avoid destroying human civilization.

There are other ways out of Marx’ prescient and accurate diagnosis of the problems presented by surplus value, and don’t let them pretend there aren’t, just because their solution is seemingly the most simple.

Charles Payne responds to the claim that we can brush off Obama’s killing of innocent civilians (including children both American and foreign) using drones because, “it wasn’t the presidents intention to kill children”.

It’s not just the collateral damage, bad as that is. Most of these drone attacks in Pakistan are done with the absolute flimsiest of evidence. They’re literally targeting men who had a conversation with a man who had a conversation with some jihadi, even though they don’t know the content of the conversations. I wish I could say I was making that up. And oddly enough, the vast majority turn out to be civilians, or rank-and-file foot soldiers at best.

That the opening statement is in any way controversial boggles my red tory mind. New Rule: If you can’t acknowledge collateral damage and dubious targeting freely while arguing for war, you do NOT get to go to war.
